Łączność optyczna jest stosowana w środowiskach, gdzie jest kładziony nacisk na wysoką szybkość transmisji danych, które są przenoszone ewentualnie także na większe odległości. Tradycyjnymi producentami dodatkowych kart optycznych są Intel, Mellanox, Broadcom oraz Qlogic.
